LA28 AND THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES MOVE FORWARD WITH UPDATED GAMES PLAN FOR THE 2028 GAMES
Approved updates bring Flag Football and Lacrosse into Los Angeles along with several Olympic events into the Valley for the first time in history, while achieving significant cost savings and bolstering fiscal responsibility, improving athlete and fan experience, and maximizing use of world-class existing venues
LOS ANGELES, CA (March 28, 2025) – Today, the Los Angeles City Council approved updates to the 2028 Games Plan that were proposed by LA28 last June that relocate some of the most popular Olympic and Paralympic sports into existing world-class arenas and stadiums across the region. This City Council meeting follows a March 26 unanimous vote of approval from the Ad Hoc Committee on the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Through approving the relocation of Football Preliminaries, this vote also added two new and exciting sports unique to the LA28 Games into the City of Los Angeles – Flag Football which will make its Olympic debut in 2028, and Lacrosse which will return as an Olympic medal sport for the first time in over a century.
“The City of Los Angeles has been an incredible partner throughout this intricate process, led by the efforts of Mayor Bass, Council President Harris-Dawson, and Executive Director Krekorian, to finalize the 2028 Games Plan,” said LA28 Chief Executive Officer, Reynold Hoover. “Los Angeles will host an incredible lineup of sports including some of the most popular, dynamic and newest events which are unique to LA28 and will be played across the city, including in the Valley, for the first time in Olympic history.”
“This venue plan sets the stage for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games to engage every part of our city like no Games in history," said Mayor Karen Bass. "The changes approved by the City Council will improve the financial plan for the Games and help us ensure that LA28 will leave a lasting legacy and turn a profit for the people of Los Angeles — as did our 1932 and 1984 Games. I applaud the City Council for their approval of this plan, and I thank the organizing committee for their continuing hard work to make sure the 2028 Games will make all of America proud as we welcome and inspire the world.”
Following the inclusion of five new sports to the 2028 Olympic sport program, LA28 is optimizing the use of the Stadium in Exposition Park, adjacent to the LA Memorial Coliseum, for Flag Football and Lacrosse. This optimized use of the stadium brings more days of competition between the two sports, which will welcome more spectators for a longer duration of Games-time to one of the main competition zones in Los Angeles. Similar to previous editions of the Games, Football Preliminaries will take place in several stadiums outside of the host city, which will be announced at a later date.
Several high-energy Olympic sports and disciplines were also confirmed for the Valley, which will host Olympic events for the first time in history in 2028. In addition to BMX Freestyle, BMX Racing, Skateboarding Park, and Skateboarding Street, the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area will gain Modern Pentathlon and 3x3 Basketball. These additions are made possible by relocating Olympic and Paralympic Archery to the heart of the world-class athletic complex in the city of Carson, an LA28 Venue City, maximizing use of an existing facility that will also host Track Cycling, Hockey, Rugby Sevens and Tennis.
Canoe Slalom was also approved to be relocated to Oklahoma City, where it will join Softball in top-tier, purpose-built venues. Oklahoma City's sport complexes are renowned for hosting premier Canoe Slalom and Softball events in the United States. The city will also host a series of international events leading up to the LA28 Games, including the 2025 WBSC U-18 Women's Softball World Cup Finals, a 2025 ICF Canoe Slalom World Ranking competition, and the 2026 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships.
