1984 Olympic Gold Medalist Carl Lewis Named Official Ambassador of the LA28 Volunteer Program
Los Angeles, Calif. (July 14, 2026) — Every great production needs a crew, and starting today, LA28 will begin casting the team powering the world’s largest sporting event. As the two-year countdown to the Games begins, applications are now open for fans from around the world to apply to become one of the up to 60,000 volunteers who will make up the Volunteer Crew for the Games. Leading the charge is 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist Carl Lewis, who has been named an Official Ambassador of the LA28 Volunteer Program.
"I know what it means to compete on the world's biggest stage, and I know firsthand that the magic of the Olympic Games is not just made by the athletes — it is made by the people who show up to support them," said Carl Lewis, Official Ambassador of the LA28 Volunteer Program. "Los Angeles has always shown up for me, and now it's our turn to show up for the world. If you want to be part of something historic, apply today. The role of a lifetime is waiting."
“In 2028, the world’s attention will be on LA as the world’s best athletes make history, but it's the crew behind the scenes that help make those moments possible,” said Reynold Hoover, LA28 Chief Executive Officer. “Their impact cannot be overstated — behind every event, every venue and every moment will be the LA28 Volunteer Crew, ready and eager to play a vital role in the delivery of the LA28 Games.”
While a majority of volunteer opportunities for the Olympics and Paralympics will be in Los Angeles, the reach of the LA28 Volunteer Crew will be nationwide, with volunteers supporting Olympic events in Oklahoma City and Olympic Football Tournament (Soccer) matches in New York, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, San José and San Diego.
Roles will be available in eight categories that applicants can express their interest in, including communications, driving, experience, medical, Ceremonies, operations, sport and technology. Some roles will require specialized skills which applicants can indicate within their application, including in areas such as medicine and language translation.
To celebrate the milestone, Hoover will be joined by 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist Carl Lewis, 1984 Olympic Games volunteer Paul Madwin, representatives of Delta Air Lines and more than 100 LA28 community volunteers for a beautification event at Griffith Park. The event will take place alongside Friends of Griffith Park, a non-profit dedicated to preserving one of Los Angeles’ most beloved open spaces for future generations. In 2028, the Griffith Park Zone will host Olympic Cycling Road and Paralympic Cycling Road events during the Games, making it a symbolic home to celebrate LA’s civic spirit. In addition, LA28 community volunteers will join TreePeople for a project in Canoga Park, furthering LA28’s work to help restore and protect green spaces across the city ahead of the Games.
Today’s community volunteering efforts will reach beyond the Host City and include Oklahoma City. Local volunteers will join OKC Beautiful for a community clean-up event at Zach D. Taylor Park that will feature hands-on service projects, community engagement and speaker remarks spotlighting Oklahoma City's role in supporting the delivery of the Softball and Canoe Slalom competitions for the 2028 Games.
In partnership with Delta, the LA28 Volunteer Program launched in 2025 with community volunteer opportunities, offering more than 25 events across the Los Angeles region, including beach and trail clean-ups, habitat restoration and food-packing initiatives, giving Angelenos a taste of volunteering with LA28. Delta Air Lines became the inaugural Founding Partner of the LA28 Games in 2020 and is also the Presenting Partner of the LA28 Volunteer Program, building on the organization’s thriving spirit of service.
"Delta is on a mission to connect the world which starts by giving back in our communities. It’s a high honor to be the Presenting Partner of the LA28 Volunteer Program,” said Emmakate Young, Managing Director, Sponsorships and Partnership Management. “Service is at the heart of Delta’s culture, and our team of 100,000 strong around the world are proud to stand alongside LA28 to make an impact together.”
Community volunteer opportunities continue to expand with L.A. Works, the city’s leading marketplace connecting Angelenos with non-profit and community-based service projects, who will collaborate with LA28 as it scales the development of community volunteer opportunities.
More details on the Games-time volunteer application process, including eligibility requirements, can be found on the LA28 Games-time volunteer portal. Those interested in joining the LA28 Volunteer Crew can visit the LA28 volunteer page to begin their application. Those who have already expressed interest will also receive an email with next steps — though all are welcome to apply regardless of whether they previously registered. While prospective volunteers are encouraged to apply early, there is no preference or priority given to the order in which an application is received. There will be an announcement at least seven days before the application closes to ensure everyone who wants to apply has time to.

ABOUT THE LA28 OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC GAMES
LA28 will bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games to Los Angeles in 2028, uniting more than 15,000 of the world’s greatest athletes in a celebration of sport, culture and human potential. The LA28 Games will celebrate historic milestones including becoming the first Olympic Games in history to allocate more quota spots to women athletes than men, the debut of new Olympic and Paralympic sports and becoming the first Games since 1948 to not build any new permanent infrastructure. Operating as an independently funded, non-profit organization, LA28 has built a strong foundation of successful commercial partnerships, alongside licensing, hospitality and ticketing, with the support of the International Olympic Committee.
