FOLLOW THE FLAMES 

THE TORCH RELAYS ARE COMING BACK TO THE U.S.

In 2028, the Olympic and Paralympic Torch Relays will return to the U.S.! This famed tradition sees the Olympic and Paralympic flames passed person to person to their final destination at the Opening Ceremonies. The LA28 Torch Relays will bring communities together to collectively light the way to the next chapter of Torch Relays, illuminating the beauty of our country from sea to shining sea.  

During the LA28 Olympic Torch Relay, the Olympic flame will visit all 50 states for the first time. Its epic all-state journey will start in Atlanta which in 1996 hosted the last U.S. Summer Olympic Games. 

Once the Olympic flame is extinguished at the end of the LA28 Olympic Games, the Paralympic Torch Relay will take center stage, embarking on its own journey to Los Angeles for the beginning of the LA28 Paralympic Games.

LA28 TORCH RELAYS FAQ

Q: What are the Olympic and Paralympic Torch Relays?
A: The Olympic and Paralympic Torch Relays are a historic tradition that take place in the lead-up to every Games. In each Torch Relay, the Olympic or Paralympic flames are carried by torchbearers throughout the host country, building excitement and national pride. The Relays culminate in the lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony to officially begin Games competition.

Q: When will the full Torch Relay routes be announced?
A: The full Torch Relay routes will be announced in 2027.

Q: How can I become a torchbearer?
A: Torchbearers are those who carry the Olympic or Paralympic flame during the Torch Relays. For LA28, the general public will have the opportunity to be selected as a torchbearers via a nomination process. More information on the nomination process will be announced at a later date. 

Q: My city/town would like to be part of the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Torch Relays. How can we get involved?
A: The route is currently being carefully planned in conjunction with cities and towns across the country to showcase the spirit and culture of all 50 states. After the route is published, we will share opportunities for communities to further engage with the Relays.
