Wheelchair Tennis
Included in the Paralympic Games since 1992, Wheelchair Tennis is a racket sport serving up a spectacle of back-and-forth competition between individuals or pairs. Played on a standard-sized rectangular Tennis court with a net in the middle, the goal is to score points by hitting the ball to the opposing side’s court in a manner that they cannot return it. It follows the same principles as Tennis with the exception that the ball can bounce twice. This rhythmic and tense sport is played in a best-of-three-sets format, with players needing to win six games to take a set. In the event a set is tied 6-6, athletes battle it out in a tie-break. Athletes use specialized wheelchairs for play and compete in two classifications: the open class is for those with impairments to the lower body and the quad class is for those with both upper and lower body impairments. At the 2028 Games, Wheelchair Tennis will be contested outside on durable hard courts, making for fast-paced action.
