LA28 Marks Two Years until Los Angeles Hosts its First-Ever Paralympic Games, one of the Largest in History

(August 15, 2026) — In two years, Los Angeles will welcome the world’s most elite Para athletes for the 2028 Paralympic Games, a landmark celebration of sport that will bring together a record 4,480 athletes across 23 sports, making it one of the largest and most expansive Paralympic Games in history. The LA28 Games are set to showcase a record 4,480 athletes competing across 23 sports over 15 days, including 14 days of action-packed competition throughout the LA region.

As a Games defined by firsts, LA28 will feature the Paralympic debut of Para Climbing, marking the first time an Organizing Committee has added a sport to the Paralympic sports program. The Games will also advance representation and competitive opportunity, with a record 17 sports achieving gender parity in their medal event programs and 16 additional sports offering an equal number of quota places for male and female athletes, the most ever. For the first time in Paralympic history, competition for several sports – Boccia, Goalball and Wheelchair Rugby - will start ahead of the Opening Ceremony.

Paralympic events will take place within a 35-mile radius across eight competition Zones, helping create a compact, accessible and athlete-focused Games designed to bring exceptional competition closer to LA communities while matching the needs of athletes and the respective sport’s field of play requirements with the best possible venue.

Ahead of the two-years-out milestone, LA28 joined Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Council Member Imelda Padilla in Van Nuys to celebrate the dedication of Wheelchair Basketball Square at the intersection of Victory Boulevard and Balboa Boulevard. On November 25, 1946, the site, formerly known as Birmingham Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital, hosted the first-ever official Wheelchair Basketball game, with teams composed of World War II veterans and VA patients. This event was an opportunity to recognize and honor the sport’s roots in Los Angeles and celebrate the athletes who continue to elevate Para sport on the global stage.

LA28 Paralympic Games tickets will be available in 2027. In recognition of Visa’s long-standing partnership with the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Visa is the Official Way to Pay.
