LA28 Games announce final venue plans for Sailing competitions shared between the Host City of Los Angeles and Venue City of Long Beach, optimizing competition conditions for athletes and fan experiences at both locations
Los Angeles, CA (June 30, 2025) – Today, the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2028 announced the finalized Sailing venue plan, which will include events at both the Port of Los Angeles in the iconic LA28 Games Host City of Los Angeles and Belmont Shore in the Venue City of Long Beach. Both venues offer favorable racing conditions for the best sailors in the world to compete in their specific events while also ensuring spectators have optimal viewing conditions, providing a more immersive and heightened overall fan experience.
Belmont Shore and the Port of Los Angeles are centrally located within LA28’s larger Games Plan and will attract fans and viewers from around the world with their reliable conditions, picturesque coastal backdrops and exciting competition atmospheres. The Port of Los Angeles will host six (6) boat events: Men’s and Women’s Dinghy, Men’s and Women’s Skiff, Mixed Dinghy and Mixed Multihull. Belmont Shore in Long Beach will host four (4) board events: Men’s and Women’s Windsurfing and Men’s and Women’s Kite.
“After close coordination with the Cities of Los Angeles and Long Beach, along with collaboration from World Sailing, we are excited about the opportunity to utilize two of the best locations along the Pacific coastline for Sailing competitions in 2028,” said LA28 Chief Executive Officer Reynold Hoover. “We look forward to hosting the world's best sailors in our iconic Host City of LA and the Venue City of Long Beach as both locations prepare to stage unforgettable events.”
“Sailing has a long history in our city and San Pedro will shine on the world stage,” said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. “We look forward to welcoming the world's best sailors to compete in these exciting events. I want to thank Councilmember McOsker and all of the partners for coming together as we continue to prepare for the 2028 Games.”
“Long Beach is the premiere location for windsurfing and kite – two outstanding sailing events that will captivate spectators,” said Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson. “We hosted Sailing competitions during the 1984 Olympic Games, and we cannot wait to continue our legacy and show our beautiful coastline to the world once again in 2028.”
"Nearly a century after the Port of Los Angeles first welcomed Olympic sailors in 1932, we're bringing that spirit back home with ten sailing events across our Southern California coastline in 2028. This will be a moment of pride for every family and every neighborhood in our city,” said Los Angeles City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson.
“I’m thrilled that the LA Harbor and San Pedro will host sailing competitions during the 2028 Olympic Games! It’s important that these Games are a success, not just for our city, but for the world," said Los Angeles City Councilmember Tim McOsker. "I’m grateful to the LA28 committee and to the passionate sailing advocates from the One-Five and beyond who helped make this possible. I look forward to working with LA28 to ensure that the Games uplift the sports, inspire fans, highlight the immense talent of the athletes, and showcase the very best of the LA Harbor and the City of Los Angeles on the global stage."
“Belmont Shore in Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles will provide wonderful sailing conditions which will give all our athletes a platform to demonstrate the skill, athleticism and strategic thinking required to succeed in our sport,” said CEO of World Sailing David Graham. “We look forward to the work ahead with LA28 and the IOC, plus our national federations and sailors to deliver some truly world-class sport in 2028.”
“The Port of Los Angeles is honored to host multiple sailing events during the 2028 Olympic Games at our Outer Harbor,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka. “We look forward to the ongoing partnership with LA28 as we prepare to bring the world’s greatest athletes to America’s Port.”
During the 1932 Olympics, the Port of Los Angeles hosted sailing at their Outer Harbor and during the 1984 Games, Long Beach hosted Sailing. In 2028, both venues will welcome the sport back, continuing their Olympic legacy.
To optimize viewership opportunities for the sport and its dedicated fanbase, as well as media and broadcast coverage, the events will be staged consecutively with the boards first up at Belmont Shore in Long Beach, followed by the boat racing portion of the sailing competition in Port of Los Angeles. The two venues are approximately 10 miles from each other.
More information regarding the 2028 competition schedule for all Olympic sports will be released this summer.
