Judo

The Japanese martial art of Judo debuted at the Olympics in 1964 for men and 1992 for women. It is a strategic combat sport where athletes aim to throw their opponent, immobilize them with a pin or force them to submit through joint locks or chokeholds. Characterized by quick reactions, sharp focus and strength, contests, divided into weight classes for both men and women, last four minutes, with points awarded for various techniques. A perfect throw or submission scores an ippon, ending the contest immediately. If tied, competition continues into golden score, an overtime period where the first person to score a point or force a penalty wins. Continuing a tradition introduced at Tokyo 2020, LA28 will feature a mixed team event where women and men compete together, promoting gender equality and team strategy.
Two judo athletes are competing on a yellow mat. One athlete, wearing a white judogi and black belt, is performing a throw on their opponent, who is wearing a blue judogi and black belt. The athlete in white is leaning over the athlete in blue, gripping their uniform, while the athlete in blue is being lifted off the mat, their right hand touching the ground for support. Both athletes have identifying text on the back of their uniforms.
