Sport Climbing

Sport Climbing is a dynamic and explosive sport that sees athletes demonstrate endurance, power, creativity and coordination to scale climbing walls. Climbers compete in three categories–Boulder, Lead and Speed–each highlighting different skills and formats. Boulder events challenge climbers to solve the most boulders (referred to as “problems”) in the fewest attempts, within a time limit. Competition takes place on 4.5-meter wall and athletes compete without a harness or rope. Speed events see a head-to-head race up a 15-meter wall set at a 5-degree incline, with athletes secured by an automatic belay system. In Lead, athletes aim to climb as high as possible on a 15-meter wall in a single attempt of six minutes while wearing a harness and rope. At LA28, Boulder, Lead, and Speed will each be contested separately, adding two new medal events to the sport which debuted at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Two competitive climbers ascend a vertical climbing wall during a sport climbing event. The climber on the left wears a red and white uniform with "Austria" printed on it. The climber on the right wears a blue and white uniform. Both of them are gripping red and black holds and are secured with harnesses and ropes. The wall features the "Tokyo 2020" logo prominently in the center.
