Para Cycling Road

Para Cycling Road is a captivating and exhilarating sport where athletes race over road courses on bicycles in the Road Race, Time Trial and Mixed Team Relay events, each showcasing strength, endurance and tactical acumen. Part of the Games since 1984, it is the third largest sport in the Paralympic Movement. Athletes compete across four main classifications based on the type and severity of their impairment and classification dictates which type of bikes they compete on. Athletes with vision impairments ride tandem bikes with a sighted pilot, athletes with balance impairments ride a tricycle, athletes with impaired mobility in the trunk, legs and/or hands use a handcycle, and athletes with impairments impacting power delivery ride standard bikes.

The Road Race event is an intense test of endurance where athletes, all starting at the same time, race over the road on bikes, seeking to be the first to finish. Combining strength and dynamic pace changes, this event often comes down to a nail-biting sprint between competitors in the last few hundred meters. Courses are between 26-125km depending on athlete classification.

The Time Trial is an individual event known as the "race of truth." Athletes in a staggered start are timed over a challenging course with no assistance from teammates or other participants and the winner is the rider with the fastest time over the course. Courses are between 10-40km depending on athlete classification.

The Mixed Team Relay sees teams of three athletes using handcycles each complete three laps of a circuit, alternating after every lap. Beginning with a mass start of the first athlete on the relay team, athletes push the pace to reach the exchange zone first where their teammate will continue to fight while they prepare for the next exchange. After nine laps, the first to finish takes the win for their team.
