Athletics

Athletics is one of the oldest sports in the Olympic movement, dating back to the very first modern Games in 1896. Since its inception, it has been an exciting test of athletes’ speed, strength, agility and endurance, drawing in crowds with electric displays of explosive power and mental fortitude. Athletes compete in a diverse array of running, jumping, throwing and walking events–individually and as teams–with performances determined by time, distance or height. In 1896, Athletics consisted of 12 events contested exclusively by men. Today, it has grown to include 23 events contested by both men and women, along with mixed gender relays, of which LA28 will see a new one: the high-stakes and high-speed 4x100m Mixed Relay.

The Marathon course will start at the Venice Beach Boardwalk.
A group of sprinters are captured at the starting blocks of a race on a curved track under dramatic lighting. The shadows from the stadium structure create a pattern across the track. Each runner is in the starting block, launching forward. Lane numbers from 2 to 8 are visible.
