Para Cycling Track

Para Cycling Track events challenge athletes to push their pace in bicycle races that occur inside a velodrome: a large 250-meter indoor wooden track that features banked turns and fast straights. From sprint events to endurance contests, para track cyclists ride bicycles around the velodrome track on a mission to finish first. Bike type varies based on two classification groups. Athletes with physical impairments impacting balance, coordination and power ride standard bikes modified for safety and athletes with visual impairments use tandem bikes with a sighted pilot. The velodrome’s unique setting calls for athletes to maintain a high level of tactical skill and awareness in each race, delivering non-stop thrills and fast-paced action at every turn. The sport made its debut at the last United States summer Games, Atlanta 1996, and is sure to excite fans for its second U.S. Games appearance.
Two cyclists are riding a tandem bike on an indoor velodrome track. Both athletes are dressed in matching white, blue, and red cycling suits from Team Great Britain, with white aerodynamic helmets and goggles. The front cyclist is gripping the handlebars tightly, while the cyclist at the back is slightly obscured. They are leaning forward in an aerodynamic position as they speed around the curved section of the track, which features a light wooden surface with blue and red markings. The background shows the smooth, banked curves of the velodrome.
